{"id":2462,"date":"2022-03-14T10:25:31","date_gmt":"2022-03-14T10:25:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/researchframeworks.org\/?page_id=2268"},"modified":"2022-03-31T15:45:39","modified_gmt":"2022-03-31T15:45:39","slug":"guide-to-adding-maps-to-your-rf","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/researchframeworks.org\/resources\/guide-to-adding-maps-to-your-rf\/","title":{"rendered":"Guide to adding maps to your RF"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Preparing the map data for upload to the map feature<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Map data can be either in polygon or point format contained within a .CSV file ready for upload.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ensure that the .CSV file is set up with following headings &#8211; Title, Content, Link URL, Image, Geo, Marker Icon and Categories<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t worry if there is no data in a field on the .CSV file, not all fields need to be filled.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Map information can be added as lat\/long, NGR, or eastings and northings &#8211; the system will convert to lat\/long. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Adding maps to the Framework Site<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Adding maps to the Framework site is a two stage process.&nbsp; First you need to create the map, and then add it to a page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Creating a map<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Click on <em>Maps<\/em> on left Dashboard menu and click <em>Add New.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will open what looks like a page editor, but is actually a map editor. Give your map a title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Uploading Feature data<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the information which displays the map, and where you can enter the data.&nbsp; It is possible to enter each point or polygon manually, but we recommend that points are entered as a .CSV upload, you may find that polygons have too much data for a .CSV file and therefore will need copying from a notepad file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>CSV file uploading feature data<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ensure that your data columns match the Features headings (see below).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/researchframeworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/feature-titles-1024x87.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2271\"\/><figcaption>Headings for the CSV file<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Move down to the bottom of the page to <em>CSV Upload<\/em> and click on <em>Add file<\/em>.  The media library will open and you can choose a .CSV file already there or upload a new file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/researchframeworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2277\"\/><figcaption>Uploading a CSV file to the map<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This will then import the data into the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/researchframeworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/image-3-1024x403.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2280\"\/><figcaption>The Geo spatial data from the spreadsheet in the map<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Polygon uploading<\/strong> <strong>geo data<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Polygons are likely to have too much information for a .CSV file, so with polygons it is best to use notepad &#8211; save the datapoints into a notepad and then copy and paste into the <em>Geo<\/em> field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/researchframeworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/image-11-1024x524.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2306\"\/><figcaption>Polygon data for &#8216;London&#8217; region &#8211; can be copied directly into the geo box in features <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating GEOJSON files for upload<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The above polygon text was taken from a GeoJson file of a map drawn on the <a href=\"http:\/\/geojson.io\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">http:\/\/geojson.io<\/a> website &#8211; here you can create polygons by drawing boundaries, and then save the resulting feature data as a .geojson file (which opens in notepad).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/researchframeworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/image-12-1024x590.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2312\"\/><figcaption>Geojson map with South West Region polygon drawn<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the data is imported <em>Update<\/em> the map (top right corner).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Displaying point\/polygon information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two methods for displaying any information about the data, either Popup or Infobar.  Which you choose depends on the amount of information; it is best to choose the same style for all the maps on your site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <strong><em>Info View<\/em><\/strong> choose the format you\u2019d like the information about your points on the map to show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The information displayed in the Popup or Infobar is taken from the <em>Content<\/em> field of the data &#8211; you can put any information here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your map points have more information choose the Infobar, if you\u2019re just putting a bit of short text then Popup is sufficient \u2013 you can change this later if you wish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/researchframeworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Info-bar-example.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2272\"\/><figcaption>Example of an Infobar &#8211; for more information text which can be formatted.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/researchframeworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Pop-up-example.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2273\"\/><figcaption>Example of a popup &#8211; better for small amount of text.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also set the <strong><em>Map Height<\/em><\/strong> on the web page, this defaults to 400 pixels, but if you have a lot of detail on the map that might not be enough and you can increase it (do not go above 700 pixels).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making changes to the map information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need to make changes to the map points or polygons, or any of the text is is best to do this within the original CSV file and re-upload to the media library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you make any changes and need to upload a new .CSV file, note that uploading a new file will overwrite earlier files.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Manually uploading feature data<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a small amount of data it is possible to manually upload to the database instead of using a .CSV file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Click <em>Add Row<\/em> in the <em>Features<\/em> menu, which will open a series of boxes;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/researchframeworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/add-a-row-1024x333.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2274\"\/><figcaption>Manually adding a row to the features<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Title of the point or polygon, the information you put in the Content field will appear in either the pop up or Info bar (can be text or an image), link URL can be to any page on the site (or external, this is not advised), an image can be added (this will need to be in the media folder), Marker icon is default (but also see below), and categories will be discussed later.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only box which is required is <em>Geo<\/em>, which is where the spatial data such as lat\/long or NGR for points, or polygons is located.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enter the information in the required fields, each row will be a single point or polygon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adding the map to a page to view on the site<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to view the map, and check that everything displays correctly you will need to embed it into a page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choose the page you wish to have the map on, and open it for editing (or create a new page).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/researchframeworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/image-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2282\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A map is a block like paragraphs or images, and is added in the same way.  Click on the Add block symbol, to open the dialogue box, and choose or search for <em>maps<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/researchframeworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/image-5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2283\" width=\"272\" height=\"293\"\/><figcaption>Choose or search for <em>map<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This will place a map block onto the page, in the right hand menu select the map you wish to add.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/researchframeworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/image-6-1024x268.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2284\"\/><figcaption>Select the required map in the dropdown on the right<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The map will then appear on the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/researchframeworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/image-7-1024x491.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2285\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/researchframeworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/image-10.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2301\"\/><figcaption>Choose full width<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At this point is a good idea to open another browser tab and view the page to be sure that the map is displaying correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your map is on a web page on it&#8217;s own with no headings, it is best to change the default display for the page to remove the left menu bar, do this by clicking on <em>page<\/em> in the top right corner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under <em>template<\/em> choose <em>Full width<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Changing<\/strong> <strong>Point map markers<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Each point feature on a map has a marker (polygons do not have markers), this can be an image of a pin, a drop or whatever you\u2019d like.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/researchframeworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/default-map-marker.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2269\"\/><figcaption>Default map marker<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The system has a default marker, but you can change it if you wish; you could decide to have different colours for different types of find spot for instance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These need to be a small image (a .png file which is 60px by 80px), with a transparent background.\u00a0 When you have your image you\u2019ll need to upload it to the media section of the website as you would any image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once uploaded to the <em>Media library<\/em>, find the image you wish to use.&nbsp; Click on it in the Media library to open the details.&nbsp; You then need to look at the URL at the top of the page and make a note of the item number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/researchframeworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/image-item-number-1024x635.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2270\" width=\"768\" height=\"476\"\/><figcaption>Make a note of the item number for the image<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are using a custom point marker, take the item number you noted in the Media Library for the marker image you wish to use (in the example above this was \u2018171\u2019), ensure that this is in the entered on the spreadsheet in the <em>Marker Icon<\/em> field for each line.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Preparing the map data for upload to the map feature Map data can be either in polygon or point format contained within a .CSV file ready for upload.&nbsp;
